Demand continues to rise for professionals with education and skills in the mining, management, and interpretation of “Big Data.” Kansas State University’s 15-credit-hour online graduate certificate in data analytics prepares students for opportunities in this high demand area. Data analytics is a broad field requiring expertise in technical data science as well as applied data analytics. The program’s Data Science track focuses on the techniques, methods, and algorithms for storing, retrieving, managing, parsing and computing data. Courses in the Applied Analytics track teach students to apply those computational methods toward business problems and communicate with stakeholders. All courses in the program are available online to students residing both in and out of the United States. Students never need to come to campus for any coursework.

Programme Administration

The data analytics graduate certificate is a cooperative interdisciplinary program of the Colleges of Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering. The College of Business Administration serves as the academic home for the program, coordinating the administration of the program and providing administrative support. Academically, the program is governed by a steering committee with representatives from the participating departments: Computing and Information Sciences, Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Management, Marketing, Mathematics, Statistics, and Global Campus. Two faculties, one with an applied analytics focus and the other with a focus on data science, serve as advisors for the program. The advisors provide curriculum leadership, respond to student inquiries, evaluate student admissions, advise students and develop plans of study, as well as other academic-related tasks. Kansas State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The data analytics graduate certificate program is an interdisciplinary program offered by the Colleges of Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering.


The online data analytics graduate certificate program offers courses in both data science and applied analytics to teach students how to mine and effectively communicate the meanings of large data sets. Courses in data science will provide an understanding of how to appropriately choose data manipulations and algorithms for effective data analysis. Courses in applied analytics will enable students to relate patterns and communicate the implications of the data for real-world situations. Students are required to complete 12 credit hours from the list of approved courses below plus a 3-credit-hour capstone course. Each student is required to take at least one course from each section to ensure that they are gaining a background in both data science and applied analytics. Additional credits may be earned from the selection of elective courses. In accordance with university policy, students may transfer no more than 5 graduate credit hours from another school to their graduate certificate program. Course Format All coursework is offered at a distance via K-State Online, the course management system at Kansas State University. Classes are made up of readings, videos, discussion boards and other online learning activities. Classes vary in format. Students may work on group projects using appropriate digital media tools or independently, yet share comments and questions via K-State Online. Courses are delivered within a semester time frame and maybe eight-week or 16-week classes. Summer classes are four to 12 weeks.

Admission Requirements for the Data Analytics Graduate Certificate Programme

To qualify for admission into the data analytics graduate certificate program, students must have:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on last 60 undergraduate credit hours
  • OR 3.0 minimum graduate GPA
  • OR concurrent enrollment in another graduate degree program
  • At least one course in business or fundamental calculus
  • At least one course in business or fundamental statistics
  • Advanced level of comfort working with computer applications
  • Advanced level of programming fundamentals if entering the data science track

Application Deadlines

You must be admitted for the fall semester by Aug. 1, spring semester by Jan. 1 and summer semester by May 1. This means that all transcripts, application fees, and any other requirements must be completed and received by these dates. Please note: It takes at least four to six weeks for an application to be processed once all application materials have been received by the university.
