Postgraduate Diploma in Online and Distance Education
This postgraduate diploma course is part of a programme of qualifications that culminates in the MA. These qualifications are presented by The Open University's Institute of Educational Technology and are open to students from countries all over the world. You have the unique opportunity to study the theory and practice of online and distance education through modules designed by experts from the Institute who are now using information technology to reinvent open distance learning. The modules that are offered for this qualification are designed to provide postgraduate-level study for practitioners in higher education and post-compulsory education who are concerned with online, distance, distributed and flexible learning. They aim to meet the needs of professional practitioners worldwide who are using new technologies in their learning and teaching context. They provide postgraduate professional development for lecturers, teachers, trainers, learning media specialists, and library and support staff who wish to learn more about both teaching and learning at a distance and online distributed learning in both face-to-face and distance education.
Teaching, learning and assessment methods
You are placed in electronic tutor groups where you will engage in collaborative learning with other students with the support of your tutor. You will also contribute to module-wide computer conferencing in plenary areas. You will be supported in both your group and individual study activities by an online tutor. There are no face-to-face activities programmed into this diploma but support is provided to you through other media, including telephone, online conferencing and print.
The teaching and learning are both guided and resource-based with a mix of media including print, web and computer conferencing, and the use of journal articles and other resources accessed via the OU Library.
The tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) are designed to support the programme outcomes as specified. Assessment is wide-ranging from traditional essays to practical web-based tasks and reflective writing. For the final project (examinable component) of each module you will undertake a longer piece of work appropriate to both the specific module being studied and to your own professional practice.
The University wishes to emphasise that, while every effort is made to regularly update this site, the material on it is subject to alteration or amendment in the light of changes in regulations or in policy or of financial or other necessity.
You must be prepared for study at postgraduate level. This usually means holding the equivalent of a degree from a UK university. You must also be proficient in spoken and written English. Although experience of distance education may be an advantage, it is not essential.
All study materials are delivered online.
You can take the modules in any order. We would expect you, normally, to take no more than 60 credits of study each year.
You will also need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
You should note that the University’s unique study rule applies to this qualification. This means that you must include at least 40 credits from OU modules that have not been counted in any other OU qualification that has previously been awarded to you.
